bridges) than back up the first opinion.

2nd. As the Public Works Department will most probably hava

to maintain these bridges afterwards the Honourable Director of Public Works naturally wants to run no risks to himself as regards taking over bridges eta. and therefore regardless of expense proposes most dras-

tic measures being taken.

3rd. It is very esay to he wise after the failure and I do

not think the committee quite realised the coincidence

that none of these bridges failed till the bank reach-

ed them and that the cracks were all in front and none

behind.

As regards Bridge 4 I do not at all agree with the

necessity of pulling down the bridge but entirely agree with

Mr. Williams rider that the bridge can be treated and made

quite safe. I do not consider founding on such long piles

safe when the bank can squeeze and exert lateral pressure

on them to such an extent in the centre.

For Bridge 7 I consider that it should be tested in a

similar way to Bridge 4 and watche. to see if any further

settlement takes place. The ovor: ang is greatly due to

the system on which Messrs Leigh & Orange have carried on

their work. They would not put on a good stone cutter to

dress the corner stones but preferred to make the corners

on the large side and dress then down afterwards. This over

hand shows in a very parked way from the point when Wesers

Leigh & Orange commenced work. I consiner that it would

be quite sufficient if the bridge steps moving after the

test load is on some time to dismantle the bridre as far es

road level and rebuild.

No. 8 I consider quite safe.

No.10 I do not think Mr. Williams would have been of

this opinion
